Newly employed attorneys begin trial work shortly after assuming office. Usually, this
trial work commences
in the misdemeanor division with supervised
case preparation and presentation of criminal traffic and misdemeanor cases. Occasionally,
supervised trial work will begin in the juvenile division. In addition to the Division
Chief, a training director will assist new attorneys in understanding their duties and
responsibilities, and in the continuing education process to become an effective
prosecutor.
The office has misdemeanor, juvenile, and felony
trial divisions in both Brevard and Seminole Counties. Other specialized units include
child abuse, sex crimes, repeat offender, domestic
violence, consumer information, elder services unit, and a neighborhood state attorney initiative program.
Continuing legal education is mandatory for Florida lawyers. Both in-house and external
seminar opportunities are provided, and a seminar video library is maintained for
Assistant State Attorneys to ensure compliance with the continuing legal education
requirements of
The Florida Bar.
Out-of-state bar members may practice law in Florida as an employee of the State
